GM Alex Sherzer
Alex Sherzer is a GM who was most active during the late 80's
and early 90's. He was the 1991 US Junior Champion and actually
came within a game of winning the US Championship in 1992! Alex,
along with quite a few other regular NY Master players, received
the prestigious Samford Fellowship, in which you are paid $32,000
a year to play chess for two years. At some point Alex decided
a career in chess was not for him, so he went to Hungary to
attend medical school. He has just finished with med school
and is now attending UMBC on a chess scholarship. In this time we can hope he will play
a little chess, as his sharp style is always fun to watch.
Alex was famous for his heavy preparation of the Berlin Defense
of the Ruy Lopez, which he plays without exception. Perhaps
Kramnik got a hold of his secret analysis? He is ranked 23rd in the USA as of December 2003.
