GM Pavel Blatny
The Czech GM Pavel Blatny is known for his creative style and unorthodox opening choices. He is a tremendous fighter and is always playing to win, as one can tell from his combative openings. He made a big splash on the US chess scene when he won clear first in the 1994 New York Open. With the white pieces he can play anything, but often plays lines like 1.f4, or 1.b3 followed by g3. With the black pieces he prefers to play this variation with black…. 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.nc3 g6 4.Nf3 Bg7, and in this line has his own “pet” variation as after 5.h3 Nf6 6.e5 he plays the unusual move 6…Nd7. One can argue the soundness of such ideas, but they have been working for Pavel for many years! As of November 2002 he is ranked number 37 in the USA.
